Truancy Process
Truancy Process
In Washington state, regular school attendance is required by law under the Becca Bill. Students between the ages of 8 and 18 must attend school every day, on time, unless they have a valid excuse.
A student is considered truant when they have unexcused absences from school. In general:
- 7 unexcused absences in one month, or
- 15 unexcused absences in a school year may lead to a truancy concern.
When unexcused absences occur, schools are required to:
- Notify parents/guardians
- Work with families to understand barriers to attendance
- Develop a plan to support improved attendance
If attendance concerns continue, schools may involve a Community Engagement Board or file a truancy petition with the court, as required by Washington state law.
Our goal is to partner with families to ensure every student is present, engaged and supported. If your child is experiencing challenges with attendance, please contact your school so we can help.
