Ephrata School District Names New Special Education Director

Ephrata School District is pleased to announce Kristy Karman has been named the district’s next Special Education Director. Karman, an Ephrata native and Ephrata High School graduate, will begin her new role on July 1, 2026.
Karman brings more than 20 years of experience in education and student support services. Throughout her career, she has served as a special education teacher, program specialist and special education coach supporting students, staff and families. Most recently, she served as a Special Services Teacher on Special Assignment in the Bethel School District, where she supported special education programs and staff development.
“Kristy brings strong experience in special education and a deep commitment to supporting students and staff,” said Assistant Superintendent Aaron Cummings. “As someone who grew up here, she understands our community and our commitment to students. We are excited to welcome her home and look forward to the leadership she will bring to Ephrata Schools.”
Karman will replace Jamie Bessette, who has served as the district’s Special Education Director since 2022. During her tenure, Bessette strengthened programs and expanded access to services for students across the district. Beginning next school year, Bessette will return to the classroom as site manager at Tiger Cub Preschool.
“I’m incredibly excited to come back to the community that helped build the foundation for who I am today,” said Karman. “Ephrata has always been a place that values its students, and I want to celebrate the young people here because they are what makes this community great. I look forward to building on the strong traditions already in place and making them even stronger. Most importantly, I want every student to feel empowered to become who they want to be and grow into the best versions of themselves.”
Karman holds bachelor’s degrees from Washington State University and Central Washington University and earned a master’s degree in special education from Walden University. She is currently completing her administrative certification through Eastern Washington University.
