Safe Walk to School Maps

At Ephrata Schools, we encourage students to safely walk to school using our recommended Safe Walk Routes.

We understand there will be days when you must drop off or pick up your children at school. If your children live within the safe walking area, encouraging them to walk or bike to school will have positive health benefits and result in less traffic around our schools.

  • Get to School Safely!

To make sure your kids stay safe while walking and biking to school, the Ephrata Safe Routes to School Committee recommends:

    • Kids 10 and younger walk in groups and cross the streets with older kids.
    • When possible, cross the street at corners using traffic signals, crossing flags and crosswalks.
    • When crossing streets, always walk, never run. Look left, right and left again and always make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
    • Walk on sidewalks or paths.
    • When there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left of the road as possible.
    • Never run out into the street or cross between parked cars or buses.
    • Wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bike, skateboard or scooter.
  • Railroad Safety

A train can’t stop as quickly as a car. In fact, a train going 55 mph can take a mile or more to stop – that’s about 20 football fields! Below are some life-saving railroad crossing safety tips:

    • Only cross at marked railroad crossings looking both ways before crossing.
    • It’s illegal to cross the railroad tracks at any point other than the marked
    • railroad crossings. Crossing illegally can result in a $250 ticket.
    • Obey all signs and signals. Listen for a warning bell and train whistles. Watch
    • for flashing lights.
    • Never try to cross the tracks if a train is coming. Trains are very large and
    • heavy, and take a long time to stop!
    • When a train is coming, stand at least 10 giant steps away from the tracks.
    • If one train passes, make sure another one isn’t coming.
    • Get off your bike and walk it across the tracks.
