Therapy Horse Luna Brings Joy to EMS Special Needs Students

This week, Ephrata Middle School welcomed a special visitor—Luna, a gentle 7-year-old mini therapy horse from Kindhearted Mini Therapy. Owned by Jodi Peck, Luna is one of two mini horses who make therapeutic visits to schools, hospitals and nursing homes across Washington. Kindhearted Mini Therapy’s mission is to provide a safe and supportive experience where individuals can find comfort and emotional support through bonding with the animals.

The visit to EMS was arranged by Life Skills Paraeducator Tiffany Montgomery and Teacher Colleen Grigg, who worked together to bring Kindhearted Mini Therapy to meet 11 special needs students. Montgomery orchestrated the visit after volunteering with the Othello Rascal Rodeo where she saw the positive effects horses had on individuals with disabilities. The Rascal Rodeo is a unique event that provides modified rodeo experiences for those with physical and developmental disabilities. “I've seen firsthand the breakthroughs that special needs kids can have when they've been around horses,” Montgomery shared. “I wanted to provide that same opportunity for connection and therapy to our students at EMS."
During Luna’s visit, some students were initially a bit nervous, but hesitation gave way to smiles as they quickly warmed up to the friendly mini horse. For many, it was their first time meeting and touching a horse—a memorable experience that left a lasting impression.

This was Kindhearted Mini Therapy's first visit to Ephrata Middle School. We send our gratitude to Steve Wellein and Jeannie Dillenberg who introduced us to this opportunity, to Jodi and Luna for their special visit, and to Four Seasons Farm Services in Ephrata, who provided treats and brushes for Luna.
