Grant Elementary was excited to welcome back The IDEA Project this month for its annual residency dedicated to Interactive Disability Education Awareness. The return of this non-profit marked the seventh consecutive year the school has utilized this powerful program, which uses tailored, hands-on learning to cultivate deep empathy and understanding among its students. Every student at Grant Elementary, from kindergarten through fourth grade, participates in the week-long experience.

The program is structured to move students beyond simple awareness and into direct experience. Following introductory assemblies focused on the spectrum of human abilities, students moved through various interactive stations. These activities are carefully crafted to offer a practical look at the daily realities of different challenges, including those related to physical differences, learning needs and neurological or developmental processing. By simulating what it's like to struggle with a task that's easy for others, the program creates a vital connection, showing students first hand why compassion and support are so critical.

"The way this program changes our students' perspectives is remarkable," shared Principal Shannon Dahl. "It's an invaluable tool that helps children identify and value the differences among their peers, which is the foundation of genuine inclusion. The positive shift in our school culture following this program is undeniable."
